FDA finds problems at N. Idaho sprouts grower

Federal inspectors found numerous sanitation problems at a North Idaho sprouts grower linked to a recent E. coli outbreak.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration inspections in the last three weeks found rusty and corroded watering systems and corroded implements used in growing and harvesting sprouts at Evergreen Fresh Sprouts LLC of Moyie Springs.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 17 people in Idaho, Washington and three other states were infected in the outbreak of E. coli O121. Eight of them were hospitalized.

The investigation indicates a strong link to raw clover sprouts from Evergreen, officials said. An FDA traceback analysis determined that the grower supplied sprouts to seven restaurants where nine of infected persons had eaten shortly before they became ill. 89 Sick After Eating Chobani

At least 89 people have reported getting sick after eating Chobani Greek yogurt manufactured in Twin Falls, the Food and Drug Administration reported. FDA spokeswoman Tamara Ward told The Times-News ( on Monday that some have described nausea and cramps. No link has been confirmed between the illnesses and the yogurt. However, Ward says the FDA is working with Chobani to hasten its voluntary recall. Chobani last week told grocery stores to destroy 35 varieties of yogurt reported to have been contaminated by a mold associated with dairy products. Last Thursday, Chobani spokeswoman Amy Juaristi said 95 percent of the tainted product had been destroyed/Associated Press. More here.

Why Idaho Cows Are Contented?

The Food and Drug Administration is worried about what it calls an “important potential public health issue.” It could be in your latte or your child’s bowl of breakfast cereal. It could be in your refrigerator or freezer. At the very least, the FDA wants to make certain that it’s not in any of the 8 million milk-producing cattle in the United States or the 500,000 dairy cows in Idaho. When test results released last year by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service showed extremely high levels of drugs and antibiotics in cattle from dairies across the nation, including in Idaho, the federal agency announced it would launch a series of tests to address a potential problem/George Prentice, Inlander.
