At It’s Just Me, ME posts: “Is there really anyplace better to live than North Idaho? I mean really? I am now hiking Tubbs about 3 or 4 times a week and LOVE it. When my husband is with me we make a little loop through Sanders, and then back up Sherman and soak it all in. We visited Lake Tahoe last October and loved it, but noticed how built up it was. It kind of hit us on Sunday as we did our loop that WE live in a resort area like Lake Tahoe. WE live where others dream of living!” More story, photos here.
Question: How often do you realize how lucky you are to live in viewtiful North Idaho?
I
think the older I get the more of a sap I am. Maybe it’s because there are many days that I am training, and have a twinge of guilt in me about time away from my family. I know that every Mom needs her time, and it is a good and healthy thing to do for yourself, but my time away some days seems excessive. My Fridays and Saturdays, are no less than 5-6 hour training days. That’s a lot. When other Mom’s are hangin’ out, playing with their kids on the weekend, I am on a bike for 5 hours. Or running for hours. Guilt/Paula, Adventure Junkie Mom. More here.
Question: Adventure Junkie Mom, from Coeur d’Alene, is the newest member of the HBO Blogosphere. I’ve linked to her before. But haven’t highlighted a post until now. Do you mothers out there have to deal w/guilt when you take time to pursue something for yourself?
So
fast forward to Taryn’s studio. I was a little nervous, but she put me completely at ease. She was such a good sport about all the outfits I had brought! She changed backdrops twice because she thought the black backdrop would look better with one of my outfits… then recommended that we head outside for some photos in the park. So, just amazing. And then - two hours later! - she explained how she would go through the photos and make adjustments, and then put them on line for me AND send me a disk, and I said “Oh my gosh, Taryn, I’m going to pay you for this.” Really. She was just too good to not pay. And so professional. She never once flinched from treating me like a paying client. I’m impressed/Beth Bollinger, Accidental Rabbit Trails. More here.
Question: When did you last sit for a professional portrait?
Both kids started piano lessons today. The past few days have seen me worrying if we would get our money’s worth out of this expensive undertaking. Very expensive. Like, the equivalent of a monthly car payment. I was wondering if either of my kids would take to the piano in a way that would quell the pain in my checkbook. My goal is not to make concert pianists out of them. Rather, I want them to have a musical skill that gives a certain amount of satisfaction and confidence/Idaho Dad, A Family Runs Through It. More here.
Question: I regret that I never learned to play a musical instrument, especially a piano. Do you play a musical instrument? Which one(s)? Do you pay for music lessons for your children?
The long weekend started out in Bayview with the imminent closure of the Captain’s Wheel hanging over our heads. Starting with a packed house for New Years Eve, and lasting all the way through to about 7:30 pm Sunday, a full 3 1/2 hours past the scheduled close. Then it was over. The key turned in the lock, perhaps for the last time, at least with present ownership/Herb Huseland, Bay Views. More here
At her Cat House & Shooting Gallery, JeanC posts: Picked up a knock-off snuggie at Rite Aid on Saturday, they had them for $8 as opposed to the $14 for the real thing. So I had to get the zebra stripped one, I now match the throw pillows on the couch LOL.” More here.
The Coeur d’Alene Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Committee has a new BLOG! Follow the link to see discussions and articles on everything ped/bike. The committee will post information on bicycle safety, Safe Routes to School, Rules of the Road, pedestrian access for the disabled, public transportation, the future of pedestrians and bicycles in Coeur d’Alene, and upcoming issues. The site also has links to many sites related to ped/bike issues/Amy Ferguson, Coeur d’Alene Today. More here.
Question: Anyone else test-driving a snuggie? What do you think of the latest clothing fad?
I
did take time, however, to attend a coffee hosted by the Kootenai County Democratic Chair. Not being a Democrat I’m not sure why I was invited other than being on a lot of local Facebook friends lists and having been a strong supporter of Obama during the campaign. Plus we’re acquainted through the local blogging crowd. The reason for the gathering was to hear an explanation of the challenge of the recent city council and mayoral election by one of the challengers. I was interested to hear if what I understood from the papers was on track/Dogwalk Musings. More here. And: What a concept

This one’s for Idaho Dad and any other Merry Huckster who might want to see former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin in a University of Idaho sweatshirt. Photographer Paula Marchinko provided it from the Palin book signing in Sandpoint last week for Trish Gannon’s new blog, Raspberries, here.
But we were devastated the next day with the news that Lee Shellman, a longtime resident, Republican activist, and unsung hero for Hayden Lake had passed away. Shellman, who was an active force behind the Hayden Lake Watershed Association, would have been the obvious leader to take advantage of this momentum and help lead the charge. We are enormously saddened by the loss. The job will be so much more difficult without him/Terry Harris, KEA Blog. More here.
It was a letter to the editor in the Coeur d’Alene Press Wednesday 2 December 2009 that really got me riled. Where the writer admitted to wanting to go downtown and spend money freely until seeing something posted that said, “Happy Holidays.” And proceeded to “get upset” that “Merry Christmas” wasn’t being displayed instead. The question that I have for both the writer and the Press, where is your Christmas spirit? After all, what did Christ teach in his lifetime? Love thy neighbor as thyself, of course. Doesn’t sound as though much love was in evidence if the writer could take issue with a sign/Arch Druid. More here.
Question: Does the term “happy holidays” bother you?
From KerriT/OnLocation North Idaho: On a sunny but cold North Idaho November day, hundreds of starlings surveyed the landscape from overhead wires. Every few minutes they’d swoop as a group to feed in the fields below.
Maybe I shouldn’t have loved that job, though. I was subordinate to two individuals, one of
whom was intimidating with that big booming voice of his, and the other was a young kid with obvious talent who always talked down to me. So, I was basically a part-timer, always trying to prove myself, to get more hours, doing a job I loved, although I also felt I was being used. On that job, I basically got the duties no one else wanted. This job was in the field of Radio Broadcasting. I loved it; I craved it, and I continued to be a part of it, in spite of the fact that I was used every single day Between September, 1996, and November 14th, 1999, my last radio shift. Ever/Atmospheric Ruminations. More here.
Question: Describe your favorite job ever?
This year, my baby… my 39 year old baby, tells me she has bought a motorcycle.(Deep
breath) … hoping she takes her classes she talks about, after her son graduation. Yes, it is … (ok … another deep breath). I saw the bike, seems small and innocent enough. She does well with her classes, and seems to have deep respect for the bike. Then another call. She sees a bike on Criagslist. A Harley Davidson. Pink with flames. (I know in my heart she is getting it) And yes, she does. And she brings it by a week later. It is a beautiful bike and her smile is from ear to ear. And as she leaves my driveway each time, so happy with her Harley, I am happy for her but I pray her deceased father will watch over her/Simple Mind. More here.
Question: Do you have a loved one who makes you nervous by riding a motorcycle?
At Remember The Roxy, OrangeTV posts this photo of what Kidd Island Bay looked like back in the 1950s. It has developed a little since then.
Currently, congress is in the process of adding yet another category to hate crimes. First race,
then religion, now sexual orientation. To attach a “I hate you because,” (choose your own category)to the crime, in many cases raises the level of what normally would be a misdemeanor to the level of a felony. Not because the injury was egregious, but because your motives were politically incorrect. Why not add old people like me to these minority class distinctions? I certainly don’t want to get assaulted by someone half my age. Equal protection under the law, is perhaps the most important of all rights. Creating special categories of people such as these hate statutes violates that right to equality/Herb Huseland, Bay Views. More here.
Question: Do you have any misgivings re: hate-crime legislation?
Born in West Virginia, moved at the age of four. Went to private school until high school.
Married high school sweetheart. Had baby boy who changed my life. Realized you don’t know much in high school; got divorced. Life was hard and sad. Son was my saving grace. The best and worst time of my life. Pseudo blind date. Fell crazy in love. Married him nine months later. My soul mate and best friend. Life is fabulous. Had beautiful baby girl who made life even better. Blessed to be able to stay home. Dreams all came true. God is good/Midnight Marauder. More here.

Don’t look now, but Bent cleaned up at the North Idaho Fair w/5 blue ribbons for produce and flowers, as well as some second- and third-place ribbons. You can check out his entries and haul of ribbons here.

Question: Do you enter anything in the fair? What? How did you do?
“This weekend the little North Idaho mining town of Murray rolls out the welcome mat for their annual celebration,” writes Councilwoman KerriT/OnLocation North Idaho. “It’s everything Idaho used to be, and then some. In the 1800s there were more people living in Murray than Spokane.” More here.
Bent’s going to be giving out samples of his What The Huck brew at 6 p.m. Sunday at Stickman’s. What The Huck, of course, is the name selected at Huckleberries Online for Bent’s huckleberry-laced beer. If it’s as good as the other fruit-laced brewski conjured by HBO’s Brewmeister, you’re in for a treat — either at Stickman’s or at JohnA’s fall bash in Harrison next month. More here.
Question: Have you consumed a Bent brew? What do you think?
At Remember the Roxy, OrangeTV has posted a score form of the 1964 Diamond Cup. The unlimited hydroplane races were a hit until the late to mid-60’s when they led to rioting in downtown Coeur d’Alene and were suspended. Duane Hagadone tried to resurrect the races in the late 1980s and again in the 1990s, without success. More Remember The Roxy here.
Question: Would you like to see hydroplane races return to Lake Coeur d’Alene?
In this postcard reproduction from the 1970s, OrangeTV/Remember The Roxy provides newbies — and anyone who arrived after the mid-1980s — with an idea re: the activity that surrounded Bob Templin’s old North Shore Motor Hotel. If you look closely, the old structure comprises the lower 6 or 7 floors of the Coeur d’Alene Resort, which replaced the North Shore after Duane Hagadone and Jerry Jaeger grabbed the hospitality industry from Templin in a hostile takeover. OrangeTV has posted a new series of old photos on his Roxy Web site.
Question: What is your best memory from the old North Shore?
At As The Lake Churns, Pecky Cox snapped this photo on Priest Lake on the Fourth Of July.
I took the kids to last night’s Chamber of Commerce meeting at La Sierra, Spirit Lake’s lone Mexican restaurant. Bailey had been craving a bean burrito forever and was excited that I was finally taking him there to get one. I hadn’t realized that the waiter had brought Bailey a beef burrito instead of a bean burrito until halfway through the meal when Bailey asked me what they speak in Mexico. Spanish, I said. “Mom, does bean mean beef in Spanish?”/Taryn Hecker, Taryn A. Hecker Photography.
Question: Did you ever get “beef” for “beans” as a result of a language barrier?
