A federal grand jury charged two-time presidential candidate John Edwards on Friday with soliciting and covering up the secret spending of more than $925,000 to hide his mistress and their baby during the peak of his 2008 campaign for the White House. The grand jury's indictment in the case of USA v. Johnny Reid Edwards contained six counts, including conspiracy, four counts of receiving illegal campaign contributions and one count of false statements. The indictment said the payments were a scheme to protect Edwards' White House ambitions. “A centerpiece of Edwards' candidacy was his public image as a devoted family man,” the indictment said/Associated Press. A supermarket tabloid that recently exposed Sen. John Edwards’ affair with a documentary filmmaker is now reporting that former Vice President Al Gore attacked a Portland masseuse at a local hotel. In a bold headline next to a photo of Gore, the current issue of the National Enquirer claims Gore assaulted a Portland masseuse in October of 2006 while staying in town at an “upscale hotel”. Gore recently split with his wife, Tipper, after 40 years of marriage. The reasons for the split have not been made public but the Enquirer claims Tipper “suspected her husband was involved with “a gorgeous massage therapist”“/KATU. More here.

RALEIGH, N.C. – The mistress of former presidential candidate John Edwards says she is helping him live “a life of truth” and the two remain in love even after their affair helped trigger his downfall from the pinnacle of U.S. politics.
“Everyone talks about how Johnny has fallen from grace,” Rielle Hunter told GQ magazine in an interview released Monday. “In reality, he’s fallen to grace.” Full story.

Like years past, this one has been a whopper for high-profile philanderers. Psychologists aren’t surprised, as guys are wired to want sex, a lot, and are more likely than gals to cheat. The behavior may be particularly likely for men with power, researchers say, though they point out that despite the genetic propensity to sleep around, cheating remains a choice, not a DNA-bound destiny.
The list of powerful individuals whose marital transgressions came out this year includes Tiger Woods, David Letterman, former senator John Edwards and South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford.
The obvious question, perhaps most perplexing when it comes to wealthy men who had beautiful wives and seemingly enviable lives: “What were they thinking?”
Turns out, they may not have been thinking consciously about the acts at all.

This has got to be the understatement of the year: “I’m guessing these things don’t happen at the forefront of their brain,” Still, the article is a good read even if the answer is pretty simple– cheating is a choice.
