Boise: Best city for men

Back in the 1860s, a gold rush lured men from all over the country to the Boise Basin. Some struck it rich, but most simply struck out. Today most of the gold is gone, but in its place is something much more valuable: a rich vein of health, happiness, and fitness that the men of Boise, Idaho, are mining every day.

We arrived at Boise after a long journey measured not in miles traveled but in numbers crunched. All told, we delved into more than a dozen data sources in order to assemble city rankings in 38 different criteria, including everything from air quality to unemployment, cost of living to death rates. We factored in property crime and criminally long commute times. We even took into account the ratio of single men to single women. (After all, what's a great town if you can't enjoy it with a great woman?) But as much as this is Boise's time to shine, the rest of America's men don't need to rush there again. We've unearthed five nuggets of wisdom that will enrich your life no matter where you live. Men's Health, Full story.

Crapo: Father, Take Care Of Yourself

In a column for Father's Day, U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, urges men to take better care of their health: “Fathers take care of us, and one Father’s Day idea is to encourage them to also take care of themselves. Men often pay too little attention to their health until a serious problem emerges. According to the Men’s Health Network, men have a higher death rate for most of the leading causes of death, including heart disease and cancer. Additionally, the life expectancy of men is approximately five years lower than the life expectancy for women. Maintaining healthy lifestyles and preventive efforts are fundamental to changing these statistics. Men’s health concerns affect far more than men alone. They affect families and loved ones.” More here. (SR file photo: William Jackson Smart, father of Sonora Smart Dodds, the founder of Father's Day)

Question (for fathers): Do you get an annual physical & otherwise take care of yourself for your family's sake?

‘Fittest’ Congresman On Mag Cover

Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Ill.), the youngest member of Congress, is also the “fittest member of Congress,” according to Men's Health magazine. Schock shows off his abs on the cover of the magazine's June issue as part of a fitness contest he is helping to promote. According to a statement released by the magazine, Schock is participating in a “Fit For Life” contest to help encourage readers to “get serious about making healthy changes to their lifestyles”/Josiah Ryan, The Hill. More here.

Question: Are you fit enough to make a magazine cover representing your workplace?

Mag Picks Portland As Most Patriotic!?

We (Portland) are the most patriotic city in America, according to a new survey by Men’s Health magazine. The reason: the high percentage of registered voters who turned out for state and federal elections between 2004 and 2008; the amount spent on military veterans per capita; the high percentage of residents who volunteer and participate in civic activities; and the number of fireworks and U.S. flags we buy. The Star-Spangled Cities survey ranked Portland number one, ahead of Salt Lake City, Kansas City, Mo., Seattle and Tampa. Jersey City, New Jersey came in dead last, just behind Honolulu and El Paso/Kimberly A.C. Wilson, Oregonian. More here.

DFO: I like Portland. A lot. But I’d thing the town is “intentionally weird” way before I’d think it was “patriotic.” In fact, “patriotic” wouldn’t be on my top 10 list for Portland?

Question: Which adjective would you use to describe Portland?
