Mine Waste Linked To 2-Headed Trout

Reports commissioned by the J.R. Simplot Co. show a link between selenium contamination at its Smoky Canyon mine and a wide range of deformities in fish, including some examples of two-headed trout. The reports, carried out by consulting firms that Simplot hired, are part of the company’s push for an exception to government limits on selenium coming from the phosphate mine east of Soda Springs. Simplot spokesman David Cuoio said the company is aware of selenium contamination in the waterways around the Smoky Canyon mine, as well as concerns about what effects that contamination might have/Associated Press.
