Cda Chamber fine tunes its vision

COEUR d'ALENE - Think of 2007, and you smile.

Economists have pinpointed that year as the pinnacle of one of the most prosperous periods in the history of our nation. Some have declared that U.S. economy among the three or four most robust in the annals of civilization.

Locally, the good times could hardly have been better. In a bricks and mortar testament to the optimism of the day, the Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce flung open the doors of its brand new building across the street from the lake and the Coeur d'Alene Resort, right where tourists and retail merge.

That was September 2007, exactly six years ago.

“It certainly put bright lights and attention on an organization that for years had been very difficult to find,” Steve Wilson, the chamber's president and CEO since November 2011, said in a one-on-one interview with The Press this week. Wilson noted that in its new location, the chamber welcomes 35,000 to 38,000 visitors a year - 10 times the visitorship of the previous facility on 3rd Street.

But September 2007 proved to be a cliff with a tantalizing view - and a long way to fall. Full story. Mike Patrick, CdA Press

CdA Chamber Opposes Recall

  • Huckleberries hears … the North Idaho Building Contractors Association has also taken a position against the recall. Will post statement when I get it.

The Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce released a statement moments ago, taking a position against the attempted recall of Coeur d'Alene Mayor Sandi Bloem and three Coeur d'Alene City Council members. In a statement signed by chamber board Chairman Darin Hayes and President/CEO Stephen T. Wilson (pictured), the chamber said: “The ability of citizens to recall elected officials is necessary and vital, particularly in instances of unethical, illegal or fraudulent actions or behavior. The reason cited for recall in the petitions filed by RecallCDA meet none of those criteria. The Mayor and named Council Members have been doing exactly what they were elected to do: consider issues and make decisions. Targeting individuals for recall because of a difference of opinion is not an appropriate or valid use of the recall mechanism.” More here.

Hagadone Official To Lead Chamber

There won't be a steep learning curve for Steve Wilson in his new job as interim president and chief executive officer of the Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce. The chamber's board of directors announced Monday that it had hired Wilson to step into the interim leadership role following the departure of CEO Todd Christensen last week. … Wilson has long been involved with the chamber and served as chairman of the chamber board in 2010. He previously was general manager of The Coeur d'Alene Resort and more recently performed the same job at the Best Western Coeur d'Alene Inn/Maureen Dolan, Coeur d'Alene Chamber. More here.

Question: Does this mean Hagadone Corp. will be running the chamber?
