Great yard sale - and awards

The Saturday Hillyard Yard Sale got rained on a little bit, but shoppers had a good time in between showers and wind gusts, looking through books and magazines, glass, porcelain, kitchen gear and other gadgets. Stay tuned for an update on how much money was raised.
And in case you missed it, here's a link to the story from last week about Hillyard's Main Street award.
The Greater Hillyard Northeast Planning Alliance and The International District on East Sprague will both be recognized at a potluck reception prior to the city council meeting tonight. Reception is from 5-6 p.m. in the Chase Gallery, just outside city council chambers.

Hillyard Hall of Fame awards

- were handed out Saturday at a dessert event at The Outlaw Café. Here are the winners:

Junior/senior volunteer of the year: Laura O’Brien from O’Brien’s Used Furniture.

Best supporting neighbor: Steve Bucknell of the Hillyard Festival Association.

The ‘design your own award’ winner is: Ross Russell, for Chief Grunt of the Year.

Rookie of the year: Richard Burris, from Hillyard Community Futures, GHBA, and much more.

The Above and Beyond award goes to:

Business – The Outlaw Café, for hosting meeting after meeting, fundraisers and the Hillyard Santa.

Individual – Marv and Vickie Peterson, for all they do to bring the neighborhood together.

Friend of Hillyard Award:

Business – The Exchange newspaper, for helping with advertising and for reaching out to the neighborhood even during tough times.

Individual – Pia Hallenberg with the Spokesman-Review Hillyard Blog, for sharing with the world how great Hillyard is.

Citizen leader of the year: Luke Tolley, because of all the work he does for countless organizations here, and he has a Hillyard crest tattoo on his leg.

And finally, the Hillyard Hall of Fame award goes to Desi Bucknell for her almost 10-year long history of being a leader in the neighborhood.

Congratulations to all.

About this blog

Welcome to the Hillyard neighborhood blog. My name is Pia Hallenberg and I’ve worked as a journalist in Spokane since the fall of 1998; for the last six years I've worked for The Spokesman-Review.

In April, I started a neighborhood blog on South Perry Street (where I live). When it came time to expand the blog activity, Hillyard was an easy pick: There is so much going on in this neighborhood in terms of new businesses and street improvements, festivals and new construction - and there is a strong sense of neighborhood history and pride. I'm looking forward to highlighting all of that on this blog.
