SPOKANE, Washington — As Snohomish’s Gary Lewis was preparing to win the
iRacing.com ASA Northwest Late Model Tour event at Spokane County Raceway (SCR), local racers took to the half mile track, some for the first time in two seasons.

Under a full moon, the Cops & Robbers and Hobby Stock divisions
made their SCR 2009 debut. A front and rear wheel drive class, Cops
& Robbers, throws in a new twist to a typical oval event by adding
a police pursuit. The 4-cylinder cars attempt to outrun the Spokane
County Police Department sponsored Cop car. With lights flashing, the
Cop car has 8 cylinders pumping under the hood trying to track down the
Robbers.

Fortunately for the Robbers in Saturday night’s event, the Cop
car was much more interested in stopping for doughnuts than pursuing
them. Mark Wakefield, piloting a Robber truck, set fast time, won the
heat race and main event, with son-in-law, Scott Rupert trying to knock
him out of the top spot. Rupert got close several times, but the truck
of Wakefield was just too strong. Both handily outran the Cop, though
he vowed to catch them next time.

In the Hobby Stock division, Matt Tarr held off son, Brenden and
Andy Brown for the win. The younger Tarr set fast time for the day,
while Brown took the A-Heat race. After numerous lead changes, a 3-car
shootout held fans in suspense until the checkered flew, waiting to see
who would cross the line first.

This Saturday you won’t want to miss Spokane County Raceway’s action
filled event with the INSCA Winged Sprint cars, Northwest Late Model
4s, and Cops & Robbers. Qualifying gets under way at 6 p.m. with racing at 7:00 p.m. General admission is $12 for adults, $10 for Military & Seniors, and $5 for kids ages 6 to 14. Children 5 and under are free.
