MADISON, Ind.--- There is nothing better for fans than watching the home team win. This afternoon on the Ohio River, unlimited hydroplane racing had its version of hometown fun when the City of Madison owned Oh Boy! Oberto captured the Frisch”s Big Boy Fastest Qualifier award for this weekend’s Lucas Oil Indiana Governor’s Cup.

Steve David (Lighthouse Point, Fla.) took the top spot with the best lap of the afternoon, going 154.575 on the 2 ½ mile course.

“Taking the top qualifying spot is great,” said David.  “But we have the best fleet of boats I have ever seen in the pits ready to go and this is going to be a tough race to win—even for the home crowd.”

Dave Villwock (Seattle, Wash.), winner of eight Madison races and the winningest active driver in the sport with 59 wins, was second with an average speed of 153.192.

Owned by the 12,000 citizens of the city of Madison, David has been driving for the team since 2001 and he has only won one race in the hometown boat at its hometown race.

“There is more pressure on this team to perform here than anywhere else on the circuit,” added David.  “But that only makes days like this even more satisfying.”

Seven of the potential 13 boats getting ready to race in tomorrow’s first set of heats and Sunday’s final are within 11 miles per hour of each other.

“That might not seem that close but when you have those speeds that tight on water, it is truly close,” added David.
