Yes, Carl Edwards won the race, streaking away after a restart with three laps left and beating Kurt Busch to the finish line by .668 seconds. But Edwards’s second victory of the season, his first at Richmond and the 21st of his career played second fiddle to the radical change of fortune that irrevocably altered the seasons of four of his competitors.
It wasn't a track record but it was more than fastest enough to push aside Kurt Busch (201.879 mph) and Kasey Kahne (201.213 mph), his two closest competitors. It was the 12th career pole for Carl Edwards in his 316 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races.
As Denny Hamlin put it, Carl Edwards is “relevant again” after winning Sunday's Subway Fresh Fit 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway in a green-white-checkered-flag finish that took the race four laps past its posted distance of 312 laps.
Carl Edwards took the top spot from Brad Keselowski on lap 73 of 82, completing a pass to the outside as the cars approached the esses at the 2.45-mile road course. Keselowski regained the lead momentarily on Lap 76 but lost it again to Edwards' crossover move as the cars approached Turn 1 to start Lap 77.
The victory was an effective salve to the disappointment Edwards felt after finishing second in the Feb. 20 Daytona 500 and having his pole-winning car knocked into the fence early in last week’s race at Phoenix.
