Matt Kenseth said his car was fast all weekend, and it showed on track, with Kenseth qualifying on the pole and becoming the first driver since Jimmie Johnson in 2008 to win at Kansas Speedway from the first starting position.
After winning last fall at Kansas Speedway, Matt Kenseth became the surprise of qualifying at Kansas Speedway, capturing the pole for Sunday’s STP 400 with a new track record of 191.864 mph. This is Kenseth’s ninth NASCAR Spring Cup Series pole and his first pole of 2013. Today’s qualifying effort earned him his second pole in 15 races at Kansas Speedway.
The 1.5-mile track, resurfaced last summer, has been a speed bump, of sorts, for Kyle Busch.
He’s without a NASCAR Sprint Cup victory or a top-five finish in 11 starts at Kansas Speedway, where Busch’s best performance is a seventh in 2006. Busch also has finished off the lead lap in five races – a rarity.
Taking advantage of changing conditions Sunday at Kansas Speedway, Denny Hamlin held off Martin Truex Jr. over the final 30 laps to win the STP 400, his second victory of the season, his first at the 1.5-mile track and the 19th of his career.
