NHRA Top Fuel points leader Shawn Langdon, Robert Hight (Funny Car), Mike Edwards (Pro Stock) and John Hall (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were winners at the world’s most prestigious race, the 18th of 24 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events. It is the last race in the NHRA’s regular season and sets the stage for the six-race Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship playoffs which begins Sept. 13-15 at zMAX Dragway near Charlotte, N.C.
John Force has been a threat at nearly every U.S.Nationals over the years on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. As the veteran looks to gain a spot in the series Countdown to One playoffs a win this weekend would go a long ways to securing that berth.
Here's a look at this week's NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series stop in Minnesota.
Matt Hagan (Funny Car), Morgan Lucas (Top Fuel) and Vincent Nobile (Pro Stock) were winners of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event in Seattle, the 16th of 24 in the 2013 season.
Ron Capps powered his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger to his fourth win at the scenic Bay Area track with a holeshot performance of 4.085 seconds at 307.79 mph to hold off the Castrol GTX Ford Mustang of 15-time world champion John Force in the final round. It marked the 40th career win for the California native.
Shawn Langdon (Top Fuel), Vincent Nobile (Pro Stock) and Hector Arana Jr. (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event, the 15th of 24 in the 2013 season.
Spencer Massey, who is currently third in the season points standings, hopes to score another victory at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals, July 19-21 at Bandimere Speedway, located 10 miles west of downtown Denver.
Funny Car driver Johnny Gray picked up his fourth win of 2013 on Sunday with a victory against Ron Capps at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park. Khalid alBalooshi (Top Fuel), Mike Edwards (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event, the 13th of 24 in the 2013 season.
John Force powered his 8,000-horsepower Castrol GTX Mustang to a leading performance of 4.021 seconds at 317.72 mph, setting a new track E.T. record in the process. Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel), Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) and Michael Ray (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were qualifying leaders at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Series event, the 13th of 24 in the 2013 season.
Tony Schumacher’s fiery finish stopped the clocks in 3.930 seconds at 269.29 mph, but it was quick enough to hold off a determined Clay Millican, whose Parts Plus dragster trailed and the veteran driver remained winless in six career final round appearances. It was the third win of the season and the 72nd overall for local favorite Schumacher, a longtime Chicagoland area resident.
Courtney Force earned her second victory in 2013 and third in her career, improving her overall record against her father, a 15-time Funny Car world champion, to 4-2. It was their first meeting in the finals. Courtney Force, who lost to John in the first round at Bristol Dragway last weekend, outran Alexis DeJoria, Tim Wilkerson and defending Funny Car world champion Jack Beckman to reach the championship round.
The event, which has already drawn a massive fan response, is the 11th event of the 24-race season and will feature all four professional categories: Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle. The event will be televised on ESPN2HD.
John Force earned his fourth victory at Bristol Dragway and the 135th title of his legendary career when he defeated arch-rival Cruz Pedregon in the final round. Force outran daughter Courtney Force, points leader Matt Hagan and rising star Blake Alexander to advance to the final round.
With warmer weather conditions for Saturday’s two qualifying sessions, no one improved on Mike Edwards’ Friday run of 6.632 seconds at a track record speed of 208.23 mph in his Interstate Batteries/I Am Second Chevy Camaro. Edwards has dominated the Pro Stock competition at Bristol in the last four seasons. He defeated hometown favorite Allen Johnson last year in a close final round and outran finalists Erica Enders-Stevens in 2011, Rickie Jones in 2010 and Greg Anderson in 2009.
Del Worsham powered his 8,000-horsepower DHL Toyota Camry to a run of 4.008 seconds at 314.83 mph to move to the top of the Funny Car qualifying field at Thunder Valley. If the time holds, it would be Worsham’s first No. 1 qualifier in Funny Car since April 2010, sixth overall in Funny Car and 13th in his career.
Tony Schumacher and all the stars of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series will be in search of victory at the 10th of 24 events in the 2013 season. Schumacher (Top Fuel), Ron Capps (Funny Car) and Mike Edwards (Pro Stock) will be looking to defend their 2012 victories at the event, which will be televised nationally on ESPN2HD.
Shawn Langdon powered his Al-Anabi Racing dragster to his first Englishtown win with a performance of 3.853 seconds at 316.38 mph to hold off his Al-Anabi Racing teammate Khalid alBalooshi, who ran at 3.869 seconds at 297.29 mph in the final round. This was the first time the two Al-Anabi drivers raced in the final round. With the victory, Langdon takes the points lead away from U.S. Army dragster driver Tony Schumacher.
Spending time around the IndyCar team owned by Sam Schmidt last weekend at the Indianapolis 500 has energized Morgan Lucas heading into this weekend's race in Englishtown.
Ron Capps and Don Schumacher Racing's NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger R/T led by crew chief Rahn Tobler and assistant John Collins uncorked a qualifying run of 3.964 seconds at 320.89 mph that remains the quickest run ever by a Funny Car last year at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park,site of this weekend's NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event.
Antron Brown will certainly be one of the favorites to win the Toyota NHRA Summernationals, May 30-June 2 at Raceway Park. Steve Torrence (Top Fuel), Johnny Gray (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) are the defending winners of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event, which will be televised nationally on ESPN2HD.
