Dan Dickau bringing his second local barber shop to the South Hill

Former Gonzaga University basketball player Dan Dickau will open The Barbers on Grand, his second area barber shop.

It’s going into 1,200 square feet in the former Walgreen’s drive-through pharmacy at 1304 S. Grand Blvd. He said he hopes to open on June 19.

Dickau, a TV and radio broadcaster during basketball season, opened his first barber shop near the North Division Y in 2013. It’s at 9331 N. Newport Highway. During the first month, his business will offer $5 haircuts, Dickau said.

“That's how I hope to help people get introduced to the business,” he said.

Dan Dickau used to be 6- foot, 3-inches. Maybe, but he’s downsized since then

After writing today's story about Dan Dickau opening his barber shop, The Barbers, up by the North Division Y, the only reservation we had is about the former Zag hoop star's listed height.

At his NBA page, Dan is listed at 6 foot 3, 180 pounds.

When I visited Dan at this shop, I was struck by his size. He's not 6-3 and not 180 anymore. Either he's lost weight and height, or those NBA stats were a bit inaccurate.

He does have large hands. He's a good addition, by the way, to Spokane's small business team. Welcome, Dan.

GU hoop stars Stepp and Dickau will be on hand for Dick’s Sporting Goods gala

The young folks are happy now that Spokane Valley got an H&M store. Big news there.

Now the rest of the Inland Northwest gets something to celebrate: the opening on Wednesday of the new Dick's Sporting Goods store.

Why is this big? Dick's (we didn't know this before) is the largest U.S.-based full-line sporting goods retailer.

The outdoor retailer's store is also in the Spokane Valley Mall, which has to be happy that it's landed both Dick's and H&M.

The store is hosting a sports celebrity weekend celebration. Former GU hoop stat Blake Stepp will be on hand from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

On Sunday, Dan Dickau, another Zag hall of famer, will come by from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A press release noted the Spokane store is the retailer's third in Washington and its 518th nationwide.
