Tyler Lafferty explains his uncanny, constant need to create new businesses

This week's main morning event is Thursday's Connect Northwest breakfast featuring Tyler Lafferty, co-founder of Seven2, 14Four and a number of other businesses.

It starts at 7 a.m. at the Georgian Room of the Spokane Club, 1002 W. Riverside Ave. The presentation starts at 7:30 and runs until 9 a.m.

Lafferty is also a member of Greater Spokane Incorporated’s trustees, the Mead School District Riverpoint Academy Board of Advisors, Spokane STEM’s Design and Leadership team and Spokane Youth for Christ.

Among the sponsors of the event is Cowles Co., which also owns The Spokesman-Review.

Registration is $30. You can sign up here.

Where are the state’s fast-growing private firms? Not here, if you ask these guys

Who are the state's fastest growing private companies?

My guess is that it has to include Spokane's Green Cupboards and at least a few other risers, like Imprezzio Solutions.

Not according to a survey produced by Puget Sound Business Journal. We just took a look at it and we saw not one company from our side of the woods.

Here's the full list of 100. If you spot a company that is from over here, let me know, and I'll buy you a cup of joe for the help:

Which Idaho or Eastern Washington startups belonged in today’s story?

Today's SR story on three growing Spokane area startups is part of this newspaper's yearlong look at jobs and employment challenges.

The three we focused on are were digital marketing agency Seven2, green online retailer  GreenCupboards and Liberty Lake software and app developer Gravity Jack. All three showed the same pattern: gradual and steady growth in a relatively new market or industry, along with the ability to land  work from outside the immediate region.

We didn't do one thing, and maybe our readers can help. What are the best examples of fast-growing startups in North Idaho or in the rest of Eastern Washington?  We considered Coeur d'Alene-based Pacinian, a company with immense upside. But much of its work to date has been beta development and the firm has yet to announce any one big deal with a major customer.

There are certainly other job-growing startups we didn't include. Please pass along any suggestions by posting them here.

Seven2 one of two dozen finalists to win a $25K office makeover in online contest

If you're a fan of Spokane's Seven2, you can help the company win a $25K office makeover. Seven2, a digital marketing agency based downtown, is a finalist in an online competition hosted by ecommerce company Turnstone.

Seven2 is going up against 23 other businesses, with five firms selected based on an online vote.

That vote can be submitted at http://contest.myturnstone.com/videos/. Voting runs through May 13.

Turnstone, a Steelcase brand, created the “Win a Sweet New Office!” contest for small and emerging businesses – companies with less than 100 employees – to showcase the correlation between good workspaces and improved creativity, productivity and growth.

Seven2 got to the finals by submitting a video at this link.

Thank you, 14Four. Improved sobriety test protects you from reckless tweets

The Step 2 tagline on the online version of the Social Media Sobriety Test sums it up:

“Choose your hours of intoxication.”

About a year ago the coders who work at Spokane creative agency 14Four had fun making a “social media sobriety kit” that kept people from posting drunken comments on sites like Facebook or Twitter.

The test was just upgraded by 14Four with a holiday theme.  As the new version gains blog and broadcast notoriety, those at 14Four who've worked on the sobriety test project say it's been a great showcase of their talents and skills.

In the world of advertising and creative marketing, half the battle is winning eyeballs. And that has clearly happened with the sobriety test, said Jeff Oswalt, 14Four’s president.

Last year’s version involved just a web browser tool that set time limits when one could post messages or photos. The tests themselves were simple: follow a moving object onscreen with a mouse or type the alphabet backwards.

The new version comes with holiday-themed warnings, such as: “Before you hand out copies of your backside or tell your in-laws how you really feel, download the Holiday Party Sobriety Test and protect yourself, from yourself.”

It also added mobile versions for Android and iPhone; you can download the free sobriety app from iTunes.
