Gary Locke for Secretary of Commerce?

Looks that way. The Associated Press is reporting that:

“A senior administration official says that President Barack Obama’s likely third pick for Commerce secretary is former Washington Gov. Gary Locke.”

Please check out my blog on the Gary Locke choice and feel free to comment on it. There are some important reasons Locke should be looked at carefully before being given this critical post:

His working for Enron-esque unethical companies while governor in Washington State that have huge business in China is one concern. Another is his too close relationship with China via family connections that may blind him to the caution required in dealing with the corrupt and militarily powerful (thanks to the stealing of our technology by the Chinese and the outsourcing illegally of that technology from the U.S.by corrupt corporations) Chinese government.

I like Gary Locke’s personality and his apparent good intentions. That should not blind us to the threat posed by the Chinese government to our country. Wishful thinking is not good national security policy.

Gary Locke is a rank-and-file corporatist and a so-called free trader whose ideology has caused more jobs to be sent out of the country faster than they can lock the gates of the manufacturing plants being closed. The silver lining regarding economic policy: as overseer of the Census Bureau, Locke will be too busy counting the multitudes that are the product of his friends in the Washington Congressional delegation (Murray, Cantwell, etc.) inviting the entire world to live in America to be too involved in economics.
