Gary's last comment on yesterday's post asked what we believe in (or words to that effect). Well… 1. I am fiscally conservative and socially liberal 2. I believe in a balanced budget 3. I want to keep religion out of schools and government 4. I want a single payer, government run health care system 5. I want us out of Iraq. I'm unsure what to do in Afghanistan 6. I think marijuana should be legalized (never smoked it myself, but it appears to be no worse than alcohol) 7. Legalize prostitution and gambling and tax same 8. Decriminalize certain violations - meaning no jail time 9. Abortion law has been settled by SCOTUS; let it be
1. I am to the left of Marx, and believe the words of Jesus are eternal truth.
2. Watching Biden explain to Stewart how we had to give countless billions to “too big to fail” bankers b/c if they failed financial Armageddon would have befallen us all, made me turn the channel. I am quite sick of hearing this nonsense! The super-rich are just too important but us little people better just move onto the streets so the banker can recapitalize on our lost homes selling them to 1st time home buyers: communism for the rich man plain and simple!
3. Separation of church and state! But for those who say we are founded upon “Christianly” precepts, then why are we not our brothers' keeper? Why do we have TV shows with dudes pissing on pictures of Jesus? Why is “Jesus Christ” the most common curse word? Why is there a Playboy channel? Why is gambling legal (do people sitting in a casino drinking and gambling reflect the compassion of Christ in some way?) . . .
4. “Promoting the general Welfare” of Americans can be construed to mean many things, and most certainly life itself must be its primary intent, i.e., universal healthcare, for non-profits sake, should be beyond argument.
5. We have those Iraqi oil fields, and we are even allowing some other nations to bid on acquiring a piece of the action (blood for oil!!!). Plus, we now have massive military bases in Iraq also, and now that we have massive troops and bases in Afghanistan, not only do we have access to the opium capital of the world, but we have Iran, a nation with the world's 2nd most oil reserves, literally between a rock (Iraq) and a hard place (Afghanistan)! And, of course, we know how grave a mortal threat (NOT!) Iran is to Israel, and it has been too long since we had a puppet government in Iran allowing us to exploit their energy resources . . .
6. Decriminalize marijuana asap evildoers! All the wrong people profit handsomely from the “war on marijuana”, and once government intervention into our daily lives becomes so entrenched . . , and so many of us common folk still believe the governmental/corporate bombardment of propaganda of generations past (the black/brown man will smoke a joint and rape white women, and other nonsense too numerous to list at this time), yes: get Big Brother out of our private lives! Keep it green!
7. Is not “capitalism” selling ones' time and services for money? How is that different from “prostitution”? It is not!
8. What “violations” are we talking about? If you are talking about the “war on drugs” I totally concur. If a person is growing their own cocaine or poppy, and consuming it as they see fit, wherefore is the crime? If they harm not their neighbors let them be, and if they develop an addiction then let us help them if they want help? But making criminals out of people suffering from addiction makes no sense! Contrarily, a house manufacturing toxic meth poses a health danger to their neighbors: common sense!
9. Who are we to legislate a woman's body? But we do legislate what a woman can do with her body (hence she cannot sell her time and services for money, well, sexually anyway, unless she is posing for Playboy or making a porno film that is) …: hypocrisy!
Just to reiterate on the marijuana prohibition, it's beyond ridiculous. It's not just “no worse” than alcohol, it's practically benign compared to the staggering costs and horrendous toll in addicted and shattered lives we pay for the abuse of alcohol.
And banning hemp as well, a very useful crop, almost all parts are usable and it can grow with a minimum of chemical inputs and cultivation, thus being more “green”. Idiotic we're still following a law put in place by timber barons 70 years ago.
“All the wrong people profit handsomely from the “war on marijuana”, and once government intervention into our daily lives becomes so entrenched ”
I always thought when people my age got into politics we would see marijuana legalized. But now i see it is a lot of money to government they can build prisions, hire more police and guards, buy equipment, more weapons all for the sake of the war on drugs.
I grew up in Alaska when Mary Jane was legal. There was no crime. It was not an issue. If anything, kids left it alone, because it wasn't a “thrill” to smoke. Then, they illegalized it. Now, it IS a real problem, with murder, and everything.
