Volunteers to spruce up Turnbull Refuge Saturday

WILDLIFE REFUGES — Volunteers are encouraged to sign up for the annual community work party Saturday at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge.

The event is sponsored by Spokane Audubon Society and The Friends of Turnbull in the continuing effort to restore native riparian habitat to benefit birds and other wildlife species.

Helpers will be planting native saplings and installing fence to protect the trees from deer, elk and moose browsing.

The refuge will also be host to a “potluck” lunch. Discovery School will be providing hamburgers.

What:  Community planting party at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge south of Cheney.

When: May 14, 2011.

Planting Time: 9 am to 12 p.m.

Lunch: Potluck 12 p.m. Please feel free to bring your favorite dish.

Where: Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge headquarters area. From Cheney, drive south on Cheney-Plaza Road 4.2 miles and turn left onto Smith Road toward headquarters.

Clothing: Long-sleeved shirt, work pants, sturdy boots or shoes, gloves.

Equipment: (If you can) shovels and pliers.
