SALMON FISHING -- Here's today's Salmon River spring chinook salmon fishing report from  Amy Sinclair of Exodus Wilderness Adventures in Riggins:

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game have documented a total of 21 Chinook harvested from the Salmon River; 16 adult and 5 jacks with the bulk of these fish caught in the Hammer Creek to Rice Creek area. While this is great news, overall the fishing in Riggins is still very slow; 51 hours per fish.

Continuous high flows are slowing the migration of the Chinook and keeping many fishermen from being able to go fishing.

Read on for more details from Amy:

Looking at the Salmon River hydrologic prediction service we see that cooler regional temperatures have the river in a decline at this time which will help to move the fish into our area. However, another incline in water level is predicted to begin between Wednesday and Thursday and may again have water levels unsuitable for fishing until the next decline. Hopefully when the river drops again the fish will be here.

Fish numbers have dropped off slightly at Bonneville Dam; May 28 & May 30 both saw over a 1000 fish per day but most days the numbers averaged in the high 600 range. At Bonneville Dam, the year to date count, as of May 30 is 165,116 adult Chinook. At Lower Granite May 24 was the big day with over 2400 fish crossing and the daily average is 1200 per day. Lower Granite’s year to date count, as of May 30 is 41,905 adult Chinook.

For the current Chinook salmon fishing season on the Salmon and Little Salmon Rivers, the Department of Fish and Game have set the following daily bag limit: 2 adult Chinook (over 24 inches) and 4 jack Chinook (under 24 inches).
