Ocean salmon fishing opens May 31, time to book a trip

Eight-year-old Jared Clark of Veradale topped all anglers in the weekly Ilwaco king salmon derby with a fish he landed on July 1, 2011, while fishing off the Washignton Coast with Captain Rob Gudgell of the Katie Marie booked through Pacific Salmon Charters. The king salmon weighed 21.90 pounds after it was cleaned.

FISHING -- Although charterboats are fishing daily for bottomfish out of Washington ports, many anglers are eagerly anticipating the May 31 ocean opening for king salmon.

"Fishermen will be able to keep two hatchery kings," said  Steve Burress of Pacific Salmon Charters in Ilwaco. "The forecasts are excellent. We're expecting good things."
