RIVERS -- The mid-elevations above the Columbia River were hurting for snow when this photo was made in January by northeastern Washington photograph J. Foster Fanning.

The scene will be even browner (or darker, depending on how you look at it) as the current February Pineapple Express blows through the region.

Meanwhile, enjoy the photo and JFF's note:

At the southern reaches of the Kettle River Range, where mountains meet the mighty Columbia River on the shores of Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area is the route of the Keller Ferry. Here is a late January 2015 view of that landscape as dark clouds part and the sun shines through. The Sanpoil Arm is the reach of the deep blue lake vanishing into the distant mountains. Look closely and you can see the ferry SAN POIL berthed at the northern crossing dock.
