GEOLOGY --  A free lecture, "Megafloods, the Channeled Scablands, Siberia, Mars and Beyond," will be presented byVictor Baker at 7 p.m. Tuesday June 2 at Spokane Community College Lair Auditorium, Building 6, sponsored by the Ice Age Floods Institute.

Baker, an international authority on catastrophic Pleistocene floods, is a former Geological Society of America president and NOVA contributor.

Following is more info on the program and details about Dr. Baker from the Ice Age Floods Institute:

Dr. Victor R. Baker is the renowned authority on catastrophic Pleistocene floods.  Dr. Baker will provide you with how the megafloods of the last Ice Age created bizarre landscapes like the Channeled Scablands at the margins of giant ice sheets that covered much of North America and Eurasia.  The immense megafloods of the last Ice Age created bizarre landscapes and altered the circulation of the oceans, thereby, changing Earth’s climate.  More surprising was the discovery that much larger megafloods occurred billions of years ago on the planet Mars.  For more than 40 years, this University of Arizona Regents’ Professor has been studying the most spectacular and immense flood phenomena that are currently known to occur anywhere in the solar system.  More recent discoveries reveal that much larger megafloods occurred billions of years ago on the planet Mars. The Mars megaflooding even generated a kind of ocean that temporarily made that planet Earth-like.   He is now seeking evidence of similar processes on planets beyond our solar system.

Dr. Baker (Ph.D., University of Colorado, 1971) is a former President of the Geological Society of America.  He has researched the Channeled Scabland and related megaflood landscapes of the world since the late 1960s.  His publications in geomorphology, planetary geology and philosophy of science include 18 books and more than 400 scientific papers.   His work on has been featured in multiple television documentaries, including the 2005 PBS NOVA production “Mystery of the Megaflood.” This DVD is available for purchase on the www.iafi.org Store site.
