Some private timber companies lifting fire closures, including IEP, Potlatch

WILDFIRES -- Inland Empire Paper Co. and Potlatch Corp. are reopening a combined 908,000 acres that have been closed to public access since early July because of wildfire danger.

Both companies announced the re-openings Wednesday.

Both companies charge a fee and require vehicles to have a permit for accessing their lands.

IEP manages 117,000 acres of timberlands in northeastern Washington and North Idaho. Only foot traffic is allowed at this time, the company says.

Potlatch has 791,000 acres of forest lands in Idaho available for public access for recreation purposes from the St. Maries area south to the Payette Valley.

Stimson Lumber Company has not announced a change to its closure of public access to 350,000 acres in northeastern Washington, North Idaho and western Montana.

Hancock Timber, which has 276,000 acres of former Boise-Cascade land in Idaho and 264,000 acres in Washington, would not comment on fire danger topics.
