Delivery time for bison in Yellowstone

WILDLIFE WATCHING -- Bison were dropping calves in abundance the past few days in Yellowstone National Park.

Nature times the bulk of the calves to hit the ground in a short period to reduce the chances that bears, wolves and other predators will be able to get too many of the youngsters before they get more mobile.

The bison will group up and defend the calves fiercely against wolves.

Mark your calendar if you're into watching this sort of spectacle. The third week in April is one of the prime times to be in the park with a spotting scope and camera.

Elk and deer births will come later.
