Wednesdays in the Woods presentations wildly popular at Riverside Park
OUTDOOR EDUCATION -- Think ahead if you want to participate in the free and popular Wednesdays in the Woods programs at Riverside State Park.
Only five of 100 preregistration spots are open for tonight's Birds of Prey HOOT Show by West Valley Outdoor Learning Center.
But plenty of spots are still available so far for next Wednesday's (July 6) Leave No Trace program by Holly Weiler of the Washington Trails Association. Weiler will outline seven clear ways hikers, campers and other people can enjoy the great outdoors with minimal impact to the land and wildlife.
The series of educational and entertaining programs on outdoors pursuits and natural history was a hit last year as a monthly offering, so it's been expanded, said Carol Christensen, outreach coordinator for REI in Spokane.
“This year, we’re doing it every week during summer, from June 15 to Aug. 31,” she said, noting that the programs are co-sponsored by the Riverside State Park Foundation.
The programs start Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. at the Bowl & Pitcher amphitheater. The programs are free but registration is required to assure a space. Sign up online at REI.com/Learn.
A Discover Pass is required for parking.
Other upcoming programs in the series include:

- July 20: Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail by REI.
