Yellowstone Park closing some roads, entrances for season

While a dozen cars of wolf-watchers congregate around viewpoints in Yellowstone National Park during the winter breeding seasons, it’s nothing like the wildlife traffic jams of summer. (Rob Chaney / Rob Chaney Missoulian)

PARKS -- Yellowstone National Park officials began closing some of its entrances this week and nearly all interior roads to prepare the park for the more vehicle-restrictive winter season.

The closures of the west, south and east entrances started Monday. The winter season of snowmobile and snowcoach travel starts Dec. 15.

Backcountry skiing, snowshowing and wildlife watching can be excellent in the park during the winter season.

The road from the park’s north entrance at Gardiner through Mammoth Hot Springs to Cooke City and Silver Gate remains open all year with some possible weather-related closures.

Travel east of Cooke City over the Beartooth Pass is blocked by snow and the Beartooth Highway to Red Lodge, Montana is closed from late fall to late spring.
