How Much Tipping is Enough

A friend asked me to post this question:

What is the norm for tipping these days?  A friend who works in the restaurant business says that 20% is now the norm.  What do you tip your hairdresser, pizza delivery?  How much do you pay your babysitter or nanny?

I try to tip 20 percent unless service was terrible. As far as baby-sitters are concerned, we pay $8 to $10 an hour for two kids — ages 5 and 2. ($8 for a very responsible eighth-grader who lives a block away and at least $10 for the one who is college-aged). I know a few families in Spokane who pay their babysitter $12 an hour for two young children.
We don’t go out without our kids much because it can get expensive. However, we truly appreciate the people who take care of our children and I wish we could pay them more. They do an amazing job.

As a babysitter, I am fine with pretty much anything the parents choose to give me an hour, if it’s reasonable, but if they ask I say it’s $5 an hour for 1 child and $6 dollars an hour for 2 or more. Another thing is that I’d never say “That’s less than I charge”, but if we’ve set up that it’s 6 dollars an hour and they have said they are going to be gone for 4 hours and it ends up more like 5 or 6, I’ll remind them nicely. Just my thoughts.
