Great question Lisa. I have both my mom and my mother-in-law in town. For years I hosted a huge family potluck BBQ, with all the siblings and their kids. The menfolk did the cooking, but it was not a day of rest at all! You can imagine how I spent the Saturday before Mother’s Day. Cleaning. Cleaning and Cleaning. The past few years I’ve kind of reclaimed the day. My husband takes his mom out on Friday or Saturday, and of course calls her on Sunday. Since my mom is alone, I usually just have her over and my husband cooks for us. Last year my brother came to town and took my mom out and my little family spent the weekend at my sister-in-law’s lake cabin. It was the best Mother’s Day I’ve had in years.
My mom lives about an hour and a half away from me and my mother-in-law lives within 5 minutes. I think it is a BIG blessing to have both of them so close. I spent many years far away from both. We try to spend at least part of the weekend with each, if possible. I love sharing the day with my mother and/or mother-in-law. And my children enjoy the day even more if they get to wish a grandmother happy Mother’s Day too.
