Liberty Lake Officer involved in shooting identified

The Liberty Lake Officer that was present when a Spokane County Sheriff's Deputy exchanged gunfire with a suspect Friday has been identified as Officer Jeff Jones.

Deputy Jeff Thurman and his K9, Laslo, made a traffic stop at the Chevron gas station at Barker Road and Cataldo Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Friday. Jones responded to Thurman's request for backup since the location is near the Liberty Lake city limits. A man, whom investigators still have not identified, ran away after Thurman told him to get out of the car.

Thurman and Jones chased the man and as they tried to arrest him he turned and fired a shot. Thurman returned fire, striking the suspect once.

Jones was wearing a body camera during the incident. Liberty Lake Police Chief Brian Asmus said he viewed the recorded footage once and said little can be seen of the struggle with the suspect. "You can see flailing arms and clothes," he said. "The audio is good. You can hear the gunfire, but you can't really see anything."
