New York, Philadelphia, St. Louis among finalists for MacArthur grant

This morning's story reporting that Spokane County was one of 20 local governments nationwide to receive $150,000 from the MacArthur Foundation to combat overcrowding at the jail was written before the group had released the names of all finalists.

They did just that Wednesday morning. Here's the complete list of 20 jurisdictions that will be vying for a second round of funding, potentially reaching an annual $2 million over the next two years:

  •         Charleston County, SC
  •         Cook County, IL
  •         Harris County, TX
  •         Los Angeles County, CA
  •         Lucas County, OH
  •         Mecklenburg County, NC
  •         Mesa County, CO
  •         Milwaukee County, WI
  •         Multnomah County, OR
  •         New Orleans, LA
  •         New York City, NY
  •         Palm Beach County, FL
  •         Pennington County, SD
  •         Philadelphia, PA
  •         Pima County, AZ
  •         St. Louis County, MO
  •         Shelby County, TN
  •         Spokane County, WA
  •         State of Connecticut

Shelby County, Tennessee, includes the Memphis metropolitan area. Cook County, Illinois, includes all of the Chicago metropolitan area and had a 2010 population of well over 5 million people. Pima Count, Arizona, includes the Tucson metropolitan area, and Multnomah County includes the Portland metropolitan area.

The MacArthur Foundation said more than 200 local governments applied for the grants, which were awarded to just the top 10 percent of applicants.
