Gunfire on the South Hill Sunday didn’t injure anyone but shot out the back window of a car. How the gun discharged is a point of dispute.
Spokane police say one suspect, Andrey Y. Fedin, 22, told them a friend accidentally shot the gun while they were passing the gun back and forth in his car outside 3218 E. 34th Ave. Fedin also told police the friend and another man, Aleksandr N. Shingarey, 22, were following them with the gun as he tried to get away, according to court documents filed today in Superior Court.
But Fedin’s friend Slava Reznikov said outside Fedin’s court appearance that Fedin said Shingarey and another man shot out the window after he refused to buy them alcohol.
Reznikov said he was with Fedin just before the shooting and heard the gunshot from his home a few blocks away.
“Andrey took the gun from them, put the safety on and called police,” he said.
Court documents say Fedin told officers that he confronted the shooter, which led to Shingarey taking the shooter’s side and Fedin calling police.
Police found a Ruger .22 handgun with a silencer in tall grass near the home. They said Shingarey denied knowing anything about a gun and said the window had been shot out three days ago.
Police haven’t arrested the third man, who allegedly fired the weapon. The men are convicted felons, which means they’re prohibited from possessing firearms.
Fedin and Shingarey were booked into Spokane County Jail for unlawful possession of a firearm.
