A woman was arrested on suspicion of a hate crime on Halloween after a black man told Spokane police he opened his front door to her yelling racial epithets while wearing a white sheet with “KKK” written on it.

Sharyl Ann Curtis, 42, also sprayed a liquid at Tyree Brown's children that she said was bleach that would make everyone white, according to a probable cause affidavit written by police in support of a malicious harassment charge against Curtis. Police found Curtis sitting in a park near Brown's home in the 5000 block of North Lacey Street “yelling unintelligibly.”

While being treated at a hospital, Curtis allegedly told police “I will raise my son white power” and used a racial slur while raising her right arm in the air, according to the affidavit.

“My son will shoot a cop one day and I will give them the ammo,” Curtis also allegedly said, along with repeated racial epithets against the police.

Brown told police he'd heard a woman yelling racial epithets and asking if he had candy. The sheet fell off when the woman walked down the apartment stairs, and Brown recognized Curtis “from fights and other incidents in the neighborhood.”

Brown's two children were standing in the stairwell when Curtis sprayed the bottle toward them. None of the liquid hit them, but police observed a Halloween decoration that was splashed. Witnesses said Curtis ran to the nearby park and yelled that she would get a gun and shoot everyone. A neighbor confronted her and a fight ensued before police arrived, according to the affidavit.

Curtis left the Spokane County Jail after posting bond imposed during her first court appearance on Tuesday, according to online jail records. She was arrested on a malicious harassment charge last August after a neighbor told police Curtis yelled racial slurs and started a fight. No charges were filed.

KENT, Wash. (AP) — Police say a suspect in a fatal Halloween shooting in Kent has an extensive criminal history.

The 20-year-old Auburn man was caught Tuesday night after detectives got a tip, followed a car and chased down a passenger who tried to run away. A police dog tracked him to a convenience store where he was arrested.

The man is jailed for investigation of murder in the killing 18-year-old Devin Topps on Oct. 31 outside a house party.

Topps graduated from Kentridge High School and had signed a letter of intent to play football for Eastern Washington University

A Spokane man called trick-or-treaters demons while threatening them with a large stick during a Halloween night melee in the area of East Central Avenue and North Regal Street, according to police.

John M. Gouveia, 52, alias John Sweet, remains in jail on $7,500 bond after appearing in Superior Court Monday on two counts of second-degree assault and one count of harassment.

Police responded to the area about 6:30 p.m. Sunday after witnesses said Gouveia was threatening children with the stick and told one man “that he was going to cut his heart out,” according to a probable cause affidavit.

Gouveia ran at police with an 11-inch knife and called them demons but dropped the weapon when he was about 25 feet away, according to the affidavit. He was handcuffed without further incident.

Gouveia has no criminal record in Spokane County.

A Chewelah man was arrested in Oregon on Halloween with 12 pounds of marijuana.

Kristopher Lewis Sasse, 24, was a passenger in a rented 2010 Toyota Camry driven by Angela Caitlin Chilcott, 26, of Felton, Calif., when they were stopped for speeding at milepost 252 on Interstate 5, near Salem, according to the Oregon State Police. 

A drug dog helped find about 12 pounds of marijuana in the car, which state troopers say had Arizona license plates.

Sasse and Chilcott were booked into the Marion County Jail for unlawful possession and distribution of marijuana.

The bust comes about 10 days after a Spokane man was arrested with 20 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop on Highway 97 in Central Oregon.
