What we say vs. what they hear

One of my colleagues had her two daughters in the office for a little while this morning.

Later, after the three of them had left the building, my co-worker said, darn, she had meant to take the girls over to see "Paul."

But that's so far away, one girl said.

My puzzled colleague said, no, it's not far at all...just across the newsroom.

The exchange continued and it became apparent that the girl thought her mom had said "Nepal."

At which point, the other girl excitedly inquired, "We're going to Nepal?"
