The Slice

Why isn’t Spokane a street hockey town?

First, I suppose I should note my assertion that Spokane is not a street hockey town is based on my own unscientific survey.

It's possible I'm wrong. And even if I am correct in a general sense, I'm sure there are pockets of street hockey enthusiasm here and there locally.

But why don't you see kids playing all the time?

Here are a few theories.

Spokane's youth hockey culture is deep but not wide.

Most families here don't get Canadian TV. (There are exceptions, but that's almost a prerequisite for kids along the northern tier of the U.S. being into hockey.)

This is a basketball town, not a hockey town.

Spokane moms look down on activities that require children to repeatedly yell "Car!"
