The Slice

Do you remember “The Deer Hunter”?

It won the Academy Award for best picture in the late 1970s.

There was a fair amount of controversy surrounding the Russian roulette scenes. Apparently a few people were inspired to recreate those moments in the film, with predictably tragic results.

Could make for an engaging classroom discussion about a filmmaker's freedom of expression vs. responsibility to not give ideas to drunken idiots.

But the thing I noticed was the same thing that caught my eye when I first saw the film in the '70s.

Robert DeNiro and a few others go on a deer hunt in the western Pennsylvania woods not far from Pittsburgh. And, presto, they find themselves hiking among jagged mountains in what is actually North Cascades National Park.

Were you living in Washington when you first saw "The Deer Hunter'?

Do you remember if that lurching leap of geographic settings made you ask WTF?
