The Slice

Fair comment or poor sportsmanship — you make the call

Most spectators at Saturday's just-concluded GU basketball game were standing but had not started to leave.

And a group of Brigham Young fans in Section 116 saluted their victorious team, chanting "B-Y-U! B-Y-U! B-Y-U!"

A Gonzaga fan standing in a row down below them decided to take part. Every time the fans of the Utah school shouted the "U" in their cheer, he would then tack on an emphatic "Sucks!"

So for someone near that Zags fan/cheer modifier, it sounded like this.

"B-Y-U (Sucks!) B-Y-U (Sucks!) B-Y-U (Sucks!)"

He wasn't glaring at the Brigham Young contingent. He was not really being confrontational. There was still a great deal of noise in the arena. In all likelihood, the BYU fans didn't even hear his juvenile taunt.

But none of the GU fans near the guy urged him to pipe down.
