The Slice

I’m worried about my friends who are Mariners fans

It used to be that most fans of the Seattle baseball team approached each new season with skepticism.

Sure, they would hope for the best. But in all likelihood, the Mariners did not have much of a chance to make it to the postseason.

As you know, that has changed. Now there are sky-high expectations.

That's certainly understandable. From all appearances, the 2015 Mariners could be good.

But what if, against the odds, they prove to be a flop? Will my friends who are Mariners fans be vulnerable to deep, wounding disappointment?

Comes with the territory, I suppose. If you are going to be open to the joys of winning and September relevance, you sort of have to risk feeling the pain of failure.

A band called Quarterflash (no, it wasn't Pat Benatar) once sang that you have to harden your heart. But they probably didn't know what it means to be a baseball fan.
