The Slice

Paul’s People, No. 51

Mike had a great laugh.
Mike had a great laugh.

Though we had exchanged emails, I had not met Lianne Carlson until a few weeks ago.

It was at the memorial service for her husband, Mike. That's Mike in the photo Lianne is holding.

The truth is, I had encountered Mike in person just once. It was at a gathering of former newspaper delivery boys I organized a few years ago.

But Mike was in The Slice more than 30 times over the years. And we talked more often than that. Mike knew everything about cars and he never minded answering questions.

The health challenges he faced in the last few years were staggering. But illness did not define him.

A big guy with a gentle spirit, Mike Carlson was about love, good humor and an abiding faith.

Lianne, his family and his many friends will not forget him.
