Trying to be a Zen-like sports fan
I'm too old (and arguably mature) to be getting into fist-fights.
I haven't punched anyone in 40 years. And even then, he hit me first.
So when, thanks to a friend with tickets, I attend the NAU vs. GU basketball game in November, here's my plan.
No matter what the home fans shout, no matter how mean-spirited their mocking becomes, I shall let it all roll right off me. I shall view the game in a tranquil state of bliss.
I believe the Frank Costanza character from "Seinfeld" said it best.
Serenity now. Serenity now.
Did I mention that I went to Northern Arizona?
Odds are, GU should win this game easily. In which case, the fans might be in a gracious mood. So maybe there won't be a lot of obscenity-laced tirades aimed at the underdog Lumberjacks.
But what if -- and I realize this is a big "if" -- Northern Arizona makes a game of it?
Folks, things could get ugly.
I have heard how GU fans -- OK, SOME fans -- address the opponent. And sportsmanship has nothing to do with it.
The truth is, I don't live or die with NAU athletics. I should not let a few ill-considered remarks from total strangers get to me.
But just how much "NAU sucks!" am I supposed to hear and remain silent?
I know what you're thinking: "If you are so worried about it, why even go to the game?"
It's simple. I don't want to miss the upset of the year.
