The Slice

Welcome! Here’s your picket sign

A new employee joined the S-R's newsroom web team this week.

Naturally, a number of colleagues have noted that the poor air quality was not the perfect welcome. It reminded me of another newsroom staffer during his first week at another paper.

His name was Brian Feinberg, and I seem to recall that on his very first day at work the staff members belonging to the Newspaper Guild engaged in an informational picket. So Brian was handed a sign and he joined us in marching up and down the sidewalk in front of the newspaper building on busy Union Avenue in Memphis. (Sun Studio was practically across the street.)

Now we were not on strike. It was not a walkout.

I can't remember what the signs said. I'm sure management unfairness was alleged.

All in all, it was a fairly toothless noontime protest.

Nonetheless, Brian was a bit wide-eyed. At least that's how I remember it.

Reminded me of an episode of "The Dick Van Dyke Show." Do you know the one I'm thinking of?
