The Slice

Closeout sale blues

There has been a strange vibe at Macy's in recent days.

We all know how Spokane residents love a bargain. And there have been bargains, to be sure.

It's a liquidation sale, after all.

But, of course, it's sad, too.

"It's like an estate sale," said one store employee.

Everything must go. Shirts, lamps, memories.

The place has a looted look.

I don't know how many shoppers felt a bit wistful about the downtown landmark's demise. Maybe a lot. Perhaps just a few.

But outside, on the sidewalk by Main, a street musician played a saxophone. That seemed like an appropriate, slightly mournful sound as the big store counts down to the end.
