The Slice

Night crawlers and coffee cans

Do you have sweet summer memories of stalking worms after dark?

You know, harvesting bait.

You would soak the lawn to coax the night crawlers up. You would grab a flashlight. And you would halfway fill a coffee can with wet soil.

Then it was pretty simple. You just had to look for the dark red glistening in the light. And gently grab 'em.

Then into the coffee can they would go.

Easy yet satisfying.

The bait for the next day's fishing having been secured, you just put a lid on the can and washed your hands. Done and done.

I would have reservations about sticking a fish hook into a wriggling creature these days. But back in the day, I thought of myself as the king of the night crawler hunters.

Maybe you thought of yourself that way, too.

So let me ask something. What did kids in the Northwest do about slugs?
