Perry annual meeting on Oct. 17

The South Perry Business and Neighborhood Association is holding its annual meeting on Monday Oct. 17 at South Perry Pizza. A time and agenda has yet to be determined, stay tuned for more information.

South Perry Pizza is turning a year old

There was that one time they ran out of dough - or maybe it was twice? There was lots of worry and trouble shooting and endless hours of work - and then suddenly, a year has gone by.
“I tell people it must be like having your first baby,” said Krista Kautzman, owner of South Perry Pizza. “First you are so worried about every little thing, then you relax more, then you learn you can leave it with a sitter and it’s going to be okay.”
The neighborhood pizza place is often full to the brim and it’s developed a loyal following over summer.
“We are just so grateful to the people in the neighborhood,” said Kautzman.
Her best advice to new business owners?
“Worry about the things you can control, and try to not worry about everything else,” she said. “And stay true to what you are. We don’t do delivery. We have one size pizza. And that’s just what we are.”
They do have take-out and judging by the lines to get a table on most nights, South Perry Pizza must be doing something right.
“Clearly, if it wasn’t for the support of the people in Spokane, we wouldn’t be that successful,” said chef Chris Dietz. “We’d never have been anywhere near where we are by now.”

Kautzmann guest on Mayor’s show

Krista Kautzmann of South Perry Pizza will be a guest on Mayor Mary Verner’s small business show Thursday morning from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The show can be seen on City Cable channel 5 or you can come down to the city council chambers and watch the live action. Other guests include Paul Fish of Mountain Gear and Mark Wilkerson of VEBA Service Group.
Andrew Worlock, economic development specialiast with the city, will also present the results of the city’s recent small business survey.

Support local business

South Perry Pizza chef Chris Deitz has been shopping at the market regularly all summer: “I like to support the locals, that we try to take care of each other. The world builds on small businesses. Today I’m picking up squash - but over summer it was tomatoes, arugula, basil, whatever we needed that was here. I hope the market sticks around.”

Farmers market cooking demonstrations

Chef Chris Deitz of South Perry Pizza is taking his cooking across the street and doing live demonstrations at the Farmers’ Market tonight. As part of the tomato festival Deitz is preparing several tomato-centered recipes, including a salsa fresca with peppers and cilantro, and ‘South Perry Panzanella.

The market runs through 8 p.m. today so it’s not too late to come by for some dinner inspiration.

About this blog

Welcome to the South Perry neighborhood blog. My name is Pia Hallenberg and I’ve worked as a journalist in Spokane since the fall of 1998; for the last four years I’ve lived on South Perry Street.

I love the neighborhood so when time came to pick an area for The Spokesman-Review’s first neighborhood blog, the choice was simple: South Perry is where it’s at.
