Spokane candidates will give their pitch for city office at two debates on Thursday.
The League of Women Voters will hold candidate debates for mayor, City Council president and for each of the three City Council seats on the November ballot. The group also will have a debate for the open Spokane School Board seat and forums focused on the Spokane County animal control proposal, the Community Bill of Rights initiative as well as three state initiatives.
The event starts at 5 p.m. at Spokane City Hall and is open to the public. It will be taped and will air eight times on CityCable 5, starting at 9 p.m. Saturday, according to a city news release.
Mayor candidate Mayor Verner and David Condon also will debate at noon at the weekly downtown Rotary Club meeting at the Spokane Athletic Club.

The League of Women Voters will bring Spokane's candidates head to head — or in some cases head to head to head to head — next week as they tape forums to be played through July and into August in advance of the primary.
The league's Spokane chapter has scheduled three hours of forums starting at 5 p.m. on June 30.
First up will be the mayor and council president candidates, followed at 6:30 p.m. by the Council District 1 candidates. (The other two districts only have two candidates each, so they don't have primaries.)
A school board forum will start at 7:30 p.m.

Tonight’s annual televised Chase Youth Commission debate will have a noticeably absent candidate: John Ahern.
While Ahern has appeared with his opponent, incumbent Democratic State Rep. John Driscoll, at several other forums, Ahern also missed last month’s debate sponsored by the League of Woman Voters of the Spokane Area. That event was the only other televised forum that would have featured the two side-by-side.
