Spokane Valley Fire is taking a ceremony used in other cities and making it it's own. A housing ceremony for the department's new Rescue 8 truck is set for 11 a.m. Thursday at Fire Station 8, where it will be housed. The station is at 2110 N. Wilbur just west of Pines and north of I-90.

The ceremony dates back to the days of horse-drawn fire equipment. The horses couldn't back the carriage into the fire stations, so the firemen had to do it themselves. There won't be any horses at Thursday's ceremony, but Chief Mike Thompson will speak and the Spokane Valley Fire Department Honor Guard will be in attendance.

The public is welcome, particularly those strong enough to help push the truck into the station and kids who just want to admire the shiny new rig. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony.
