The brick Greenacres Fire Station opened in November and is now ready for the public to take a look around during an open house scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The station, at 17217 E. Sprague, replaces a manufactured home that was put on the site in 2004.

There will be community safety groups on hand to talk about their work, an ambulance on display and cake and cookies to celebate the second birthday of Mako, the department's accelerant sniffing dog. Kids can go through the Fire Safety House and adults will be able to practice putting out a fire with a fire extinguisher.

It's always fun to be able to take a look inside a facility that isn't usually open to the public unless special arrangements are made. Just one suggestion - don't fill up your car with gas on your way to the open house or Mako will be really, really happy to see you. Photo courtesy the Spokane Valley Fire Department.
