Saturday’s highlights

Chris Sheppard dons only one costume on Halloween, a robe, crown and sweatshirt reading “Queen of Halloween.” Indeed, her house dominates the neighborhood, with hundreds of whimsical items for the holiday. Saturday's Valley Voice was packed full of stories (and quite a few election advertisements), so lets get right to the highlights. Reporter Lisa Leinberger stopped by the home of the Queen of Halloween, aka Chris Sheppard. Her home turns into a festival of the orange and spooky every year and this year is no different. She starts decorating the inside of her home in August but waits until September to start putting in the skeleton crawling out of its grave in the yard.

Correspondent Steve Christilaw has a story on the University High School girls soccer team, which is rallying after losing one of its star players in a car crash recently. The team had a small ceremony at their recent home game. The Spokane Valley Lodging Tax Advisory Commission recently met to make recommendations for 2014 funding to agencies that promote tourism.

We also had a ton of election coverage Saturday since ballots have now been delivered. Correspondent Valerie Putnam tackled the Millwood Mayor race between Kevin Freeman and Dennis Hamlin while Lisa covered the East Valley School District school board and Liberty Lake City Council. There was also a candidate forum last week featuring those running for Spokane Valley City Council.

It's hot and it's Monday. Enough said. That does mean, however, that we have some Saturday Valley Voice highlights to share. If you're looking for a something to do and a way to beat the heat, check out the Splash Down Waterpark. Reporter Lisa Leinberger recently stopped by to check out the Fastball water slide and the Cannon Bowl.

A captain in the Spokane Valley Fire Department is in a dispute with the department over sending religious emails using department email. Capt. Jon Sprague has been suspended without pay for two shifts, but the firefighters union is contesting the discipline.

Correspondent Steve Christilaw talked to Morgan Manchester, former East Valley High School soccer player and current captain of the Gonzaga University women's soccer team. Manchester stopped by an East Valley practice recently.

We managed to pack a bunch of interesting stories in Saturday's Valley Voice, starting with the touching story by correspondent Steve Christilaw about Central Valley High School soccer player Joseph Guerrinha. He's back in the game after suffering a serious concussion that he has no memory of.

The Spokane Valley City Council discussed projects to improve the Mission trailhead in Greenacres and establish railroad quiet zones west of Millwood. The were also questions as to whether the city counld afford to do the work. In other City news, newly appointed councilman Arne Woodard has already filed the required paperwork to run in the November election.

Correspondent Juli Bergstrom-Wasson has a look at the new Five Guys Burgers and Fries location at Sprague and Sullivan. I went in once to check it out and the line was nearly out the door. But you can munch on free peanuts while you wait and watching the kitchen staff at work is entertaining.

Other stories rounding out the pack include one on the end of the Miss Spokane Valley pageant and reporter Lisa Leinberger's story on the expansion of a women's homeless shelter.
