Snowed under, but not by WSU news

UPDATED: 12:40 P.M.

Let's have a vote. How many of you think I'm going to make it from Spokane to Pullman today? I'll give you a hint: I'm not sure I can make it out of the neighborhood, because the snow in the street is, in spots, taller than my Honda. Here's another hint: The DOT camera in Spangle isn't working and the one in north Colfax is just a blur. But I'm game. If it stops snowing, I'm heading back down for a week of interviews, games and shoveling. Read on.

••••••••••

• By the way, when I leave for Pullman this afternoon – and yes, there's a darn good chance I'm going to brave the elements for you folks – don't anyone tell my wife. Kim worries about me making the drive in good weather. We'll call her at work and can let her know after the successful trek. Deal?

• UPDATE: On the advice of everyone I know who has tried to move around today, and some of them in 4-wheel drive vehicles, I decided not to attempt the trip. The other deciding factor was my inability to get my car to end of the block without getting stuck. Shoveling my way out of berms the length of Eastern Washington just didn't excite me - or my cardiologist. So I'll try again tomorrow.

But today's weather is just another reason to love the Net. You can travel from here to LA without leaving the warmth of the dining room. Which is what we did this morning. And we actually found a few interesting links.

• Of course, we discovered the best for Cougar fans in Spokane (why am I not shocked?) with the S-R's Mike Vlahovich's feature on future Cougar Anthony Brown. The Shadle Park small forward signed with WSU after committing a couple years ago – it was so long ago, Glenn Kasses, my predecessor on the beat, wrote the story. ... Sorry to say, but that is the only purely WSU-related story for the day. But in my never-ending search for surprises, and to promote my upcoming stories, we found a couple other things. The P-I has this feature on Garfield High's first-year coach, Ed Haskins. Why is that name familiar? His brother Aaron has a big spot in Cougar basketball history and is the subject of a Then and Now feature of mine that will appear here on Monday and in Tuesday's Spokesman. ... Finally, there were a couple of Pac-10 team involved in nonconference games last night, with the Stanford Cardinal remaining unbeaten and UCLA routing winless Loyola.

• That's it for this morning. I hope all the links work, and you are getting used to our new system. It's something we're getting used to as well. We'll be back this afternoon, if only to let you know about our travel attempts. Till then …
