Bulldogs fall short in Memphis

Gonzaga made repeated runs at Memphis, but couldn’t overcome slow starts in each half and fell 81-73 to the top-ranked Tigers at the FedExForum on Saturday.

Gonzaga trailed by three at half and Memphis ran off nine of the first 11 points of the second half. GU would make a series of comebacks, getting within 46-41, 62-55 and again late when the Tigers struggled at the line. Gonzaga goet as close as six in the closing minutes.

But Memphis hit enough free throws to hold to improve to 19-0. Gonzaga’s six-game winning streak came to an end. The Bulldogs dropped to 15-5.

Jeremy Pargo had 25 points and seven assists. Josh Heytvelt added 13 points and Micah Downs finished with 11.

Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 21 points for Memphis. Derrick Rose had 19 points and nine assists. Joey Dorsey had 9 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks, including a key one late on Matt Bouldin that he Dorsey completed with a dunk at the other end.

Check back for the game story in about 90 minutes.
