Cool weather greets WSU

COUGARS • UPDATED: 2:15 P.M.

The first of the day's two practices are in the book and there were some interesting moments on the cool morning. Read on for our thoughts.
••••••••••

• It was a relatively short practice, lasting a little more than an hour and a half. And the Cougars were in shoulder pads, helmets and shorts, which took the hitting down a notch. Still, there was some scrimmage and the offense seemed to get the better of it, especially right out of the shoot, when Dwight Tardy broke off a long run. The tempo the offense displayed was a notch or two quicker and sharper than had been evident earlier in the week. ... There was more of a team element to the special teams work today, with Jeshua Anderson putting his speed to work as one of those returning kicks. Later in the day, Anderson went up for a Kevin Lopina pass, got tangled with Aire Justin and came down hard on his back. It took him a while to get up but he returned to practice. ... Freshman quarterback Jeff Tuel took more snaps during the scrimmage sessions, completing one pass to fellow frosh Gino Simone. ... Bernard Wolfgramm and Jesse Feagin returned to practice today though Johnny Forzani's foot was still in a boot. Freshman Carl Winston sat out with a concussion suffered Thursday, so the running back will be out a while. And backup linebacker Deon Ford has a fractured right thumb and will be out in the neighborhood of six weeks. ... One last note: Was talking with Tony Thompson for tomorrow's S-R story and he made it clear he has been joking with the coaches, trying to get them to put in a tight end double pass, possibly with J.T. Levenseller as a target. I can report chances are slim. Tony did say Jack would be out for the afternoon practice. ... Former Cougar Andy Roof is ticketed to start at offensive guard for Central Washington.

• UPDATE: The schedule for the Great Alaska Shootout was announced today. The Cougars are in the same side of the bracket at the University of Alaska, Anchorage (play Wednesday, Nov. 25) and Nicholls State (Friday, Nov. 27). The championship games are Saturday, which just happens to be Apple Cup Saturday.

•••

• That's it for this morning. We'll be back after the afternoon practice. Until then …
