As the days roll on, we’re getting closer to the midpoint of fall camp – depending on when you determine camp closing and the first-game prep starting, that midpoint is one of the days this week. Which means it’s almost time for us to start our annual position previews. Those will get underway Friday morning. Until then, we have our usual morning spin around WSU and Pac-10 links.
• Washington State: The Cougars practiced twice yesterday. They got something different out of each one. … This opinion piece from freelancer Howie Stalwick on CougFan was a freebie. … And that is about it.
• Around the Pac-10: The Times’ Bud Withers has started his Pac-10 previews. Here is the one on UCLA. … Washington: The Huskies held their first scrimmage yesterday, with an emphasis on the running game. … Oregon State: The life of a third-string quarterback is not all that exciting, especially when the guys ahead of you have a lot of experience. … Oregon: The Ducks have been operating with a thin receiver corps. Now some of the injured guys are coming back. … Cal: We got news! The Bears scrimmaged with the quarterbacks battling and Jahvid Best sitting. … Stanford: We have news here too. Well, at least notes. The most interesting one: Star running back Toby Gerhart wears a yellow jersey at practice in an attempt to avoid injury. … USC: Speaking of third-string quarterbacks, the Trojans’ Mitch Mustain, who transferred from Arkansas a couple years ago, is looking for playing time. …UCLA: The Bruins have a pretty good pair of tight ends. … Arizona State: Just a few years ago, when you read the name Brock Osweiller, you were thinking that it wouldn’t be too long and the Montana kid be pulling down rebounds for Gonzaga. Now you read about him and it’s about how soon he’ll be throwing passes for the Sun Devils. … Arizona: It looks like they would love to have Mustain or Osweiller or anyone in Tucson. The UA quarterbacks have been struggling. But a starter has to be picked this week.
• That’s it for this morning. Only one practice for WSU today and it starts in about two hours. We’ll have an update afterward. Until then …
